Matthew 13:3 “And He spoke many things to them in parables, saying, “Behold, the sower went out to sow; 4 and as he sowed, some seeds fell beside the road, and the birds came and ate them up. 5 Others fell on the rocky places, where they did not have much soil; and immediately they sprang up, because they had no depth of soil. 6 But when the sun had risen, they were scorched; and because they had no root, they withered away.7 Others fell among the thorns, and the thorns came up and choked them out. 8 And others fell on the good soil and yielded a crop, some a hundredfold, some sixty, and some thirty. 9 He who has ears, let him hear” (NASB).
Jesus explains how the seed that sprang up and died soon after was due to the lack of depth in the soil, “they had no root”
definition of root; “a part of the body of a plant that develops, typically, from the radicle and grows downward into the soil, anchoring the plant and absorbing nutriment and moisture”(http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/root).
21 “yet he has no firm root in himself, but is only temporary, and when affliction or persecution arises because of the word, immediately he falls away” (NASB).
Jesus explains how persecution arises concerning the word, and this is when those with “no firm root“ fall away.
This is interesting because John 1:14 reads,
14 “And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth” (NASB).
And furthermore Isaiah 37:31 reads,
14 “The surviving remnant of the house of Judah will again take root downward and bear fruit upward (NASB).
This has intrigued me because there are many among us falling away from the truth due to the lack of this “Root”.
The root is Jesus Christ! He ALONE is the sustainer of life…
John 4:14 records Jesus saying to the woman at the well,
10 Jesus answered and said to her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, ‘Give Me a drink,’ you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water” (NASB).
He ALONE is the one who saves us, He is the Root!
Revelation 5:5 and one of the elders said to me, “Stop weeping; behold, the Lion that is from the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has overcome so as to open the book and its seven seals” (NASB).
So the Root is, the Word>became flesh, Jesus Christ>the Truth>The Living Water
